I looked at all of the Chicago community areas to see how much their small-scale new home construction has sped up, comparing new-construction permits issued in 2024-2025 against 2021-2023. I counted buildings with one to six units — single-family homes, two-flats, three-flats, and small six-flats, the housing types that built much of the city and that Chicago spent decades barely permitting. North Lawndale stands out, and the sharpest acceleration is in the "missing middle" of two- to six-unit buildings, where its permitting pace has more than quadrupled.
